Experimental Punk
When somebody says their band is experimental, it means they don’t know what they are doing. There are 3 levels of ignorance. One, you don’t have a clue at all. Two, you know what you want, but don’t know how to get there. Three, you know what you want, you know how to do it, but the outcome is unpredictable. Punk As A Doornail was initially in Stage Two of ignorance when we were a noise band. Then when we became a punk duo, skateboard guitar (skatar) and drums, we were in Stage Three for the first 2 years.
Punk As A Doornail would be considered experimental or avant-garde. But we have graduated. We know what we are, how to do it and how it will sound. Initially we were purposely ignorant, but now we can be progressively intelligent.
The best part of being avant-garde and/or experimental is that you can be a real pompous asshole about it. That was one of my first turn ones about experimenting. The other intrinsic reward is the creativity and the unusual methods involved. Being a real f-ing asshole is vital to the punk rock band. Thus, being pompously artsy in a punk band is a real benefit. The definition of avant-garde even explains how one is so much better than everyone else just by being in the avant-garde. This definition of avant-garde is from “The Random House Dictionary of the English Language”:
The advance group in any field, especially in the visual, literary, or musical arts, whose works are characterized chiefly by unorthodox and experimental methods
We are so rad! Punk As A Doornail is so rad and pompously artsy fartsy and rad! Punk As A Doornail is so avant-garde by definition! We are the elite in our field! We’re very visual and musicial and our lyrics are profoundly stupid! That’s the literal arts part. The skatar is the root of our unorthodox method. Who makes a skateboard guitar the primary and/or sole instrument in a punk band? Punk As A Doornail makes this the only instrument besides drums. Oh, so unorthodox and avant-garde. This is why Punk As A Doornail is such a great candidate for being labeled experimental punk or avant-garde punk. Hell, why not expand the labeling a bit broader to experimental rock or avant-garde rock while you’re at it, fucko.
